Information Warfare: russian fakes for April 11th 2022 (at 18:00)

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering Russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, media, social networks and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of Russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is continuing the campaign to deny russian war crimes. There are, once again, claims that Ukraine is being controlled by the west. Interestingly, these claims periodically alternate with claims about Zelenskyy going against the wishes of his western allies. Depending on the state of events, the narrative that shows Ukraine in the most negative light is chosen. After showing Marine Le Pen all the support they could, russian propagandists are disappointed with her results in the first round of the French presidential elections.

Main fake narratives:

  • Ukraine is being controlled by the west
  • Russians don’t commit war crimes
  • World is blind to Ukrainian war crimes
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime
  • Sanctions against Russia are destroying Europe
  • Russophobia is dominating the world

FAKE: 36th Marine Brigade was abandoned in Mariupol

Source:

Disproof:

Such a message was indeed posted on the brigade’s Facebook page, but the page was, most likely, hacked. Firstly, the message is written in russian. Secondly, the message repeats, almost word for word, the main narratives of russian propaganda. Together with the recent fake about a surrender of a battalion of Ukrainian Marines, who, after closer examination, were determined to be Ukrainian prisoners of war from other units, captured on the northern front, should have demotivated the Ukrainian defenders.

FAKE: The goal of the war in Ukraine is to end US world domination

Source:

Disproof:

The Kremlin constantly changes the official goals of the war, in response to the poor performance of their army. At the beginning, the goals were: full “denazification” and demilitarization of Ukraine, regime change and full reverse of the political course of the country. After the defeats in Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy, the goals changed to “liberation” of Donbas, with no mentions of regime change or of total conquest of Ukraine. Now, when the civilized world is united against russia and is supporting Ukraine with weapons and money, the struggle against the West and the change of the current world order were added to the goals.

It will be interesting to see who or what russia will fight next week.

FAKE: The S-300 systems, transferred to Ukraine, were destroyed by a missile strike

Source:

Disproof:

If we are to believe the words of russian propaganda, the S-300 division that was transferred to Ukraine by Slovakia, was destroyed near Mykolaiv on April 10. Thereafter, once more, near Kharkiv. And then, to be 100% sure, russian propaganda had destroyed the same division once more, near Dnipro. A very enduring division.

The thing is, russia is frightened by the ever-increasing stream of weapons that is coming into Ukraine from Europe. Such fakes are used to calm down russian citizens and falsely assure them that russia actually controls the situation on the ground.

Slovakia, in turn, denied the claims of russian propaganda about the division being destroyed (see picture below).

FAKE: The russian evidence concerning the attack on Kramatorsk was dismissed

Source:

Disproof:

The evidence, presented by russians, is not dismissed because of some “international conspiracy”. The evidence, presented by russians, is dismissed because it’s not valid evidence. When russia commits another war crime, it quickly churns out tons of fabricated “evidence”, facts that are not connected to the crime in any way, and some laughable conspiracy theories. Thereafter, Kremlin officials conclude that the “evidence” given by them is enough to prove russia innocent, and all further investigations and accusations are in breach of international law and are, in essence, an attack against russia.

In this case, the main russian “evidence” – the serial number of the missile that hit the Kramatorsk rail station, cannot identify which unit had launched the missile. The serial number is a factory marking, not a military unit identifier. The marking was applied onto all missiles made at the Votkin manufacturing plant, after which they were dispersed among the different republics of the Soviet Union. The missiles with markings similar to this one could be wielded by any country who have “Tochka-U” in their arsenal, including russia and belarus.

Be advised: Russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass-media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
