Information Warfare: russian fakes for April 16th 2022

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering Russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, media, social networks and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of Russian fakes.

Today the russian information space is mostly static, the media activity is down on the weekends, no new dominating narratives arose today. The existing narratives are still present, but there is no propaganda push in any specific direction. Most probably, russian propaganda is preparing for the announcement of the general mobilization in russia. The narrative about the necessity of total destruction of the Ukrainian national idea is getting more traction.

Main fake narratives:

  • US developed anti-russian bioweapons in Ukraine
  • Ukraine is being controlled by the west
  • Russians don’t commit war crimes
  • World is blind to Ukrainian war crimes
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime and bring disease
  • Sanctions against Russia are destroying Europe
  • The world is dominated by russophobia

FAKE: Ukrainian forces tried to blow up Kakhovka Dam

Source:

Disproof:

Russian propaganda is, once again, trying to divert attention from Russian war crimes. This time, they are blaming Ukraine for supposedly attacking the Kakhovka dam with “Tochka-U” missiles.  Of course, the heroic Russian soldiers shot down all the missiles. No evidence is presented, as always.

The thing is, if Kakhovka Dam is destroyed, the water of the reservoir would flood the Kherson region, killing hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens. It would also destroy all the bridges across Dnipro. Not even a madman would think of a reason to commit such an atrocity. But, according to Russian propaganda, Ukraine is pure evil, and that’s enough of a reason.

It looks like Russians are running out of ideas for their fakes. I wonder what they will come up with next? Ukraine is going to blow up the Moon?

FAKE: Ukraine will attack refugees on Lozova train station

Source:

Disproof:

After the attack on civilians on the Kramatorsk train station, which Russia had tried to deny, they are planning their next war crime. This time, they are denying their involvement even before the attack. Once again: if Russia says that their enemies are planning something horrible, it’s Russia who is actually planning this horrible thing. First, Russia “warns” everyone that Ukraine is going to bomb civilians in Lozova, then, after bombing civilians, Russia will say “I told you so”.

Lozova, like Kramatorsk, is a vital transit hub for refugees from the Donbass region. Most of the civilian evacuation trains pass through Lozova on their way west. By attacking these train stations, Russia is trying to demoralize the Ukrainian population and force the country to surrender. But, as always, Russians didn’t study their history. As with the Blitz during the World War II, bombing civilians will not break the nation’s will to resist, it will only strengthen it.

FAKE: OSCE personnel were spying for Ukraine

Source:

Disproof:

There are a couple of problems with that fake. Firstly, most of the OSCE personnel were Russian, which, in large part, explains the total uselessness of the OSCE mission in the Donbass region. Secondly, the mission was not allowed to visit most of the Russian-controlled territory of the region, so it is not clear how the cameras would have been placed. And, lastly, no evidence is presented.

As always, Russia is trying to play the “world is against us” card. But the conspiracy falls flat when you remember that the OSCE mission was sabotaged by Russia from the start.

Be advised: Russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass-media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
