Information Warfare: russian fakes for May 6th, 2022 (at 18:00)

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, mass media, social networks, and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is still not as active, since the first week of May is a holiday week for russia. The news is filled with preparations for May 9 victory parade. Propagandists staunchly deny the reports of western intelligence agencies about plans for russia to officially declare war on May 9, so those reports are probably true.

Kremlin approved the list of companies, whose products are subject to “parallel import”. Basically, it is a state-approved contraband and piracy scheme for goods and intellectual property of companies that left russia.

We see more stories about Europe being starved to death, probably to highlight the impressive russian standard of living.

A lot of negativity is focused on Poland, with russian propagandists spewing insults at the Polish nation on an hourly basis.

Main fake narratives:

  • Ukrainian soldiers are surrendering en masse
  • Ukraine is being controlled by the west
  • russians don’t commit war crimes, Ukrainians do
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime and spreading disease
  • Sanctions against russia are destroying Europe
  • The world is dominated by russophobia

FAKE: Poland announced its plans for annexing western Ukraine

Source:

Disproof:

russian propaganda efforts to break the western unity are now focused almost entirely on Poland. The number of insults and deprecating comments towards Poland and Polish people had risen significantly in recent days. Poland, a staunch Ukrainian ally with a history of bloody russian occupation, is portrayed as a country without culture, its only national idea being the destruction of russia.

As Poland celebrated its Constitution Day on May 3, the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, in his address to the nation, proclaimed his confidence in Ukrainian victory. He also quoted President Zelenskyy, by saying that he believed that Ukraine and Poland will live together without any borders between them.

russian propaganda twisted this statement, interpreting it as a promise to annex western Ukraine. kremlin officials started to talk about Polish “fanatical greed” toward Ukrainian lands, dictated by “phantom pains” of the former Polish empire.

This is obviously, and, quite hilariously, a projection of the internal russian psyche, complete with references to empire-building and historical lands. Just replace “Poland” with “russia”, and you will have the current russian national idea.

Additionally, when President Duda spoke about “no borders” between Poland and Ukraine, he was quoting President Zelenskyy.

Be advised: russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass-media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
