Washington has condemned the agreements reached between Moscow and Minsk regarding the deployment of Russia’s tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus.
U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller made the corresponding statement at a briefing in Washington on Thursday, Ukrinform’s own correspondent reports.
“We strongly condemn the arrangement. It’s the latest example of irresponsible behavior that we’ve seen from Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine over a year ago,” said a representative of the US State Department.
According to the official, the United States has made it clear to Russia that the use of chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons in the war it unleashed would be met with “severe consequences.”
At the same time, the representative of the State Department noted that now the U.S. sees no signs of Russia’s preparation for the actual use of nuclear weapons and neither does it see the need to make any changes to its own nuclear posture.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, the defense ministers of Belarus and Russia signed documents regarding the placement of tactical nuclear weapons in a special storage facility on Belarusian soil.
