Warsaw Mayor on Trump: decisions matter, not words

Poland will continue to persuade the Americans that Putin should not succeed in Ukraine, as it would pose a threat not only to Europe but also to the United States. It is the decisions that matter, not what individual politicians say across the ocean.

This was stated by Rafał Trzaskowski, the current Mayor of Warsaw and a candidate for President from the ruling Civic Coalition (KO), in a brief interview with Ukrinform. He was responding to a question about his strategy for cooperating with U.S. President Donald Trump in case of his victory in the upcoming Polish presidential election.

Trzaskowski emphasized that Poland must convince Americans that if Putin is able to “sell” the end of the war in Ukraine as his success, it would pose a danger to the security of both Europe and the U.S.

“However, what matters are the decisions, not what a particular politician says. We will convince the American administration that it is worth continuing to support Ukraine and that any peace agreement should be made on the terms that Ukraine agrees to — in the interests of Europe and the U.S. We will keep doing this because it is in Poland’s national interest,” Trzaskowski emphasized.

The presidential candidate further noted that Poland, all of Europe, and the U.S. should continue military support for Ukraine as Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom, which is also the freedom of Poland and Europe.

“Obviously, we will continue our military support,” he stressed.

He also mentioned that, as a presidential candidate, he supports Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the European Union.

As reported, the first round of Poland’s presidential election will be held on May 18, with a possible second round on June 1.

Current polls show that Rafał Trzaskowski has the best chances of winning, though he will likely need to secure victory through both rounds of voting.

In recent weeks, Trump has made several controversial statements regarding Ukraine, the end of the war, and U.S.-Russia relations.
