Kostiantyn Oborin, director of the Odesa Aviation Club and volunteer who rescued 29 Ukrainian soldiers from captivity in 2014, was killed during a combat mission in the war.
Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov announced this on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.
“Very sad news for Odesa. Kostiantyn Oborin — a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, participant in the modern struggle for Ukraine’s independence, director of the Odesa Aviation Club, volunteer, mentor, and a person of great soul and courage — was killed while carrying out a combat mission,” Trukhanov wrote.
According to him, Oborin endured the horrors of the Afghan war. He became a symbol of rehabilitation and hope for veterans, giving new meaning through parachuting, flying, and sincere human care.
Trukhanov said that in 2014, risking his life, Kostiantyn rescued 29 Ukrainian soldiers from captivity. In 2022, he fulfilled the last wish of his student, Hero of Ukraine Vladyslav Buvalkin, by scattering his ashes over their hometown of Odesa.
“Even at 63, he continued carrying out combat missions. He died remaining faithful to his oath, his comrades, and Ukraine. His death is a painful loss for all of Odesa and for those who saw him as a light, a support, and an example,” Trukhanov added.
