The President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Pia Kauma, has emphasized that Volodymyr Zelensky was elected the President of Ukraine through legitimate elections, and since martial law is in place in Ukraine at the moment, a new vote is impossible.
She said this in an exclusive interview with Ukrinform.
“I think there are at least two ways to interpret the situation. One is that this is simply a negotiation tactic to try to save Putin’s face in the talks, and then, maybe afterwards, be more realistic about Russia’s actual responsibility in all this,” Kauma commented on Trump’s remarks calling the President of Ukraine a “dictator”.
According to her, the other option, “of course, is the worst one” – “that Mr. Trump actually means what he’s saying”.
“I’d be very concerned if that’s the case, because we know here in the Parliamentary Assembly that Mr. Zelenskyy was elected through legitimate elections,” noted the OSCE PA President.
Kauma also pointed out that since martial law is currently in place in Ukraine, it is impossible to hold reliable elections, “because it’s not possible for candidates to campaign or for people to safely go to polling stations to vote”. “So, simply put, it’s not possible at this point,” she said.
As reported by Ukrinform, U.S. President Donald Trump has recently accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of not wanting to hold elections.
