Information Warfare: russian fakes for April 13th 2022 (at 18:00)

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering Russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, media, social networks and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of Russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is reacting to the capture of Viktor Medvedchuk by the Security Service of Ukraine. Medvedchuk is the godfather to one of Putin’s daughters and a longtime russian agent. The propagandists are trying to portray the Ukrainian government as savages and war criminals for wanting to exchange Medvedchuk for captured Ukrainian citizens. A wall of hate against President Biden and all things American arose after the US President called the war in Ukraine a genocide of Ukrainian people.

Main fake narratives:

  • Ukraine is being controlled by the west
  • Russians don’t commit war crimes
  • World is blind to Ukrainian war crimes
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime
  • Sanctions against Russia are destroying Europe
  • Russophobia is dominating the world

FAKE: BBC claims that Ukraine had attacked the Kramatorsk train station

Source:

Disproof:

When Russian propaganda claims that some reputable foreign press outlet has taken their side on anything, they are lying. This is not an exception. We can see images with BBC fonts and watermarks that are repeating the Russian narratives about the attack on the Kramatorsk rail station. But the BBC had not published any pictures or materials such as these. Nobody believes Russian propagandists, so they are trying to leverage the reputation of international news outlets to give their fakes some weight. It’s an act of desperation, to be sure, but laughable nonetheless.

FAKE: Ukraine is planning chemical attacks against Donbas

Source:

Disproof:

One of the rules of Russian propaganda: when they say that their enemies are going to do something horrible, it means that Russia will do that horrible thing. We have seen this in action countless times: chemical attacks in Syria, the Bucha Massacre, chemical attacks in Sumy, Rubizhne and Mariupol. So, statements like “Ukraine will use chemical weapons on its citizens” actually mean “Russia is going to use chemical weapons against Ukrainians, but Russia wants to frame Ukraine for it”.

Apparently, when you live by the code “The might is right” you don’t really see the downsides of being incredibly stupid.

Be advised: Russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass-media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
