NSDC imposes sanctions on seven representatives of UOC-MP churches

President Volodymyr Zelensky has enacted the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on sanctions against a number of representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP).

The relevant decrees were published on the president’s website, Ukrinform reports.

“To put into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine as of December 11, 2022 ‘On the application of personal special economic and other restrictive measures (sanctions),” the decree says.

The secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine was tasked with monitoring the implementation of the NSDC decision.

The decree comes into force on the day of their publication.

According to the NSDC decision, the sanctions have been imposed on Metropolitan of Zaporizhzhia and Melitopol of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate Andriy Kovalenko; Metropolitan of Luhansk and Alchevsk of the UOC-MP Vasyl Povorozniuk; Abbot of Melitopol Monastery of St. Sava the Sanctified of the UOC MP Oleksandr Prokopenko; Abbot of the Holy Dormition Cathedral the UOC MP in Kherson of Oleksandr Fedorov; Metropolitan Anthony of Boryspil and Brovary; Metropolitan of Chernivtsi and Bukovyna of the UOC MP Meletius; Archbishop Paisius.

The Cabinet of Ministers, together with the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Bank of Ukraine, have been instructed to ensure the implementation and monitoring of the effectiveness of personal special economic and other restrictive measures (sanctions).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine must inform the competent authorities of the European Union, the United States and other states about the application of sanctions and raise the issue of them imposing similar restrictive measures.
