The European Peace Facility, which currently finances military support for Ukraine, may need to be turned into a Ukrainian Defense Fund to ensure sustainable and long-term support for the Ukrainian people.

The relevant statement was made by High Representative of the European Union Josep Borrell to journalists before the European Council meeting in Brussels, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“We have to make Ukraine able to defend. So, the European Peace Facility for Ukraine maybe has to become the Ukrainian Defense Fund,” the top EU diplomat said.

According to Borrell, the EU’s security commitments to Ukraine should include not only the allocation of regular tranches of aid but also efforts in the long term – “during the war and after the war.”

He also emphasized the need to continue training Ukrainian soldiers and modernize the Ukrainian army.

As reported, a two-day EU summit begins in Brussels on June 29, with the situation in Ukraine as the first item on the agenda.
