Zelensky, U4U parliamentarians chart next steps for Ukraine’s EU membership talks

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and a delegation of the international parliamentary network United for Ukraine (U4U) discussed mechanisms for opening the first negotiation cluster this year regarding Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.

This was reported by the President’s website, according to Ukrinform.

The President thanked the representatives of United for Ukraine for their consistent political support of Ukraine during the war.

“We are counting on your support after the war as well. We hope that peace will come as soon as possible. But not everything depends only on us, on Europe, and on Ukraine. In any case, we need a just and lasting peace. We will also welcome the participation of all your countries in the reconstruction of our state,” Zelensky said.

According to him, a unified voice and joint position of Europe are especially important now. Zelensky thanked them for supporting Ukraine on the path toward EU membership. The parties discussed mechanisms for opening the first negotiation cluster this year. The parliamentarians emphasized that Ukraine must become a member of the European Union.

Among the key topics of the meeting were security guarantees for Ukraine. The President stressed that Ukraine, together with partners in Europe and the United States, is working on the architecture of security guarantees. Zelensky underlined the importance of defense support for Ukraine, joint weapons production, in particular drones, technology sharing, and partner security forces on land, in the air, and at sea.

The parties also discussed the outcome of the meeting between the President of Ukraine and other European leaders with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. Zelensky noted that Ukraine is ready for different formats of negotiations to achieve peace — both bilateral and trilateral — at the level of leaders of Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia.

In addition, the discussions covered mechanisms for using frozen Russian assets for Ukraine’s reconstruction.

As reported earlier by Ukrinform, talks were held at the White House first between the Presidents of Ukraine and the United States, and later in an expanded format joined by European leaders.
