U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Russia would face an economic war if it refuses to conclude a peace agreement with Ukraine.

President Trump announced this during a Cabinet meeting on August 26, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.

He emphasized that the United States will not engage in a “world war” but is ready to use severe economic measures to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“I’d like it to stop. It will not be a world war, but it will be an economic war. And the economic war is going to be bad, and it’s going to be bad for Russia – I don’t want that,” the U.S. president said.

Regarding potential negotiations between Zelensky and Putin, Trump noted: “You know, it takes two people to tango, and I say that all the time – you’ve got to get them together.”

Trump claimed he has good relations with Zelensky, emphasizing that the U.S. “is not paying any money to Ukraine now”, creating “completely different relations.”

The president also mentioned massive losses on the battlefield: “Last week, 7,012 soldiers died,” he said (on Monday, he cited a different figure – 7,221), not distinguishing between Russians and Ukrainians. “Over the last couple of weeks, 12,000 people died,” he added, repeating that he alone can stop the war.

Trump assured that he is not speaking for ego: “I don’t have ego when it comes to such stuff.”

He said he could resolve the situation “by doing sanctions… or by using a very strong tariff system – that’s very costly for Russia, for Ukraine, or whoever.”

He again criticized his predecessor, President Biden, claiming that Biden’s “gross incompetence” allowed the war to start. “You are going to beat someone 15 times your size… Biden should not have let that happen,” he added (apparently referring to Russia’s size, which is actually 28 times larger than Ukraine).

Previously, Ukrinform reported that the United States continues to supply Ukraine with weapons worth billions of dollars through sales to NATO allies.
