Every year on August 29, Ukrainians honor the memory of all soldiers who died in battle for an independent Ukraine.
According to Ukrinform, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote about this on Telegram.
“Every year on August 29, we honor the memory of all our fallen warriors – the defenders of Ukraine who gave their lives in the battles for our state, for our independent Ukraine. This battle for Ukraine’s right to exist has been ongoing since 2014. Since 2022, Ukrainians have been defending themselves in a full-scale war. It is an extremely long and difficult path of courage. And we do not forget those thanks to whom Ukraine stands. Eternal glory to all who stood up to defend Ukraine! Eternal memory to all who gave their lives fighting for Ukraine! Glory to Ukraine!” Zelensky stated.
As reported by Ukrinform, August 29 marks the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine who died fighting for its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
This day was established by Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 621 of August 23, 2019, to commemorate the heroism of servicemen and volunteers who gave their lives for their homeland.
The date of August 29 was not chosen by chance, as it was on this day in 2014, during the Russian-Ukrainian war and the Ilovaisk operation, that a powerful breakthrough of the Ukrainian group of troops from the Russian encirclement took place, where the mass heroism of volunteers and military personnel was demonstrated and the largest number of Ukrainian soldiers died.
