The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expects a response from all states of the world to Russia’s strike on Kyiv on the night of August 28.
According to Ukrinform, this was stressed in a statement by the MFA of Ukraine.
The Ministry notes that yet another massive terrorist shelling of Ukraine demonstrates Russia’s complete disregard for the efforts of the international community to restore a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace. Particularly cynical is Putin’s disregard for the peace process initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump, the statement says, recalling that Putin refuses to hold a direct meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and shows no willingness to take real steps on the diplomatic path of settlement.
“The Russian Federation is once again showing the world that it remains the only obstacle to peace. Russia is a terrorist state, and we call on all states and international organizations to clearly record this status,” the statement reads.
The MFA calls on all states of the world to condemn another act of Russian terror against Ukraine and the deliberate killing of civilians, especially children, by Russian forces, and to take concrete steps to stop these atrocities. Kyiv expects a strong and practical response particularly from the countries of Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific region, which have repeatedly called for peace, restraint, and a ceasefire, to compel Russia to stop the killings.
Ukraine also urges the participants of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit 2025 on August 31 – September 1 to clearly express their position on this strike and to show that they respect the principles of international law, do not tolerate Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, and the killing of Ukrainian children.
“We call for increased pressure on the Russian Federation. This includes the introduction of additional powerful sanctions, including the swift adoption of the European Union’s 19th sanctions package, the complete disconnection of the Russian Federation from international financial systems, and sanctions against the oil tanker “shadow fleet”; the introduction of powerful tariffs that will strike a blow to the Russian military economy and make it impossible for Russia to continue financing the war; the strengthening of personal sanctions against the Russian military and political leadership, making it impossible to circumvent sanctions,” the MFA stated.
The Ministry calls on partners to urgently provide Ukraine with additional air defense capabilities, increase pressure on Russia, including through the introduction of additional powerful sanctions, in particular the swift adoption of the EU’s 19th sanctions package. The MFA of Ukraine stresses that Russia openly ignores all peace efforts and only intensifies its terror, underscoring that a complete and unconditional ceasefire remains the most effective step for diplomacy to succeed on the path to peace. In the view of Ukrainian diplomats, as long as Moscow continues to respond to the world’s peace initiatives with such missile strikes, only the approach of “peace through strength” can bring the war to an end.
As reported by Ukrinform, Russian strikes on the night of August 28 caused destruction in various districts of the capital. Also, the building of the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine was damaged.
Air Defense Forces destroyed 563 drones, one Kinzhal, seven Iskanders, and 18 Kh-101 missiles launched by Russia against Ukraine on the evening of August 27.
The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas stated that Russia mocks peace efforts and chooses the path of escalation.
