Information Warfare: russian fakes for May 12th, 2022

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, mass media, social networks, and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is focused on Finland and Sweden joining NATO, and the US Lend-Lease act. The media is filled with threats toward Finland and Sweden, both veiled and overt.

Propagandists claim that Land-lease will not help Ukraine, since $40 billion is not enough to defeat russia. Only, US military spending usually snowballs with time. We had seen that during WW2, and we are seeing it now, since just two months ago the US was spending only $100 million on Ukrainian military aid.

Putin, once again, assured the nation that the economy is fine. He also said that this year’s harvest will be record-breaking for russia. He did not specify that a large portion of that “harvest” is grain stolen from the occupied Ukrainian territories.

The kremlin officials issued threats to Latvia after its Parliament decided to remove the Monument of Liberators, which russia used as a focal point in its propaganda campaign to destabilize the Baltic countries. Apparently, Latvians have no right to decide what to do with monuments in their own country.

According to russian news, Ukrainian forces in Donbas are doomed, even though they were already “doomed” three weeks ago, but nothing happened. Nothing continues to happen as russian forces struggle to achieve any meaningful gains in the region.

Main fake narratives:

  • NATO weapons are useless
  • Ukrainian soldiers are surrendering en masse
  • Ukraine is being controlled by the west
  • russians don’t commit war crimes, Ukrainians do
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime and spreading disease
  • Sanctions against russia are destroying Europe
  • The world is dominated by russophobia

FAKE: Pentagon conducted experiments on Ukrainians in a psychiatric hospital near Kharkiv

Source:

Disproof:

russian propaganda had tried to push the fake narrative about US-funded biolabs in Ukraine for a long time. They haven’t achieved any success, so they escalated. Now it is not “just” bioweapons and gene-modified birds that were supposed to spread them, but human experiments on Ukrainian citizens. As always, no evidence is provided.

In their attempts to portray Ukrainians as evil, russian propaganda resorts to fakes that are becoming more and more ridiculous.

FAKE: Ukrainians are preparing to blow up the Kaidatsky Bridge in Dnipro

Source:

Disproof:

russian propaganda claims that the Ukrainian army had mined the Kaidatsky Bridge across river Dnipro to stop the advance of russian forces. Only, the nearest russian position is more than 100 kilomteres away, and russian advance has not gotten anywhere in the last three weeks.

Propagandists also claim that Ukrainian soldiers demand a 200$ payment for anyone who crosses the river going east, supposedly to stop people from fleeing from Ukraine into russia. Firstly, there are four other bridges in Dnipro city. Secondly, who in their right mind would think that Ukrainians want to run toward russians? Such a high assessment of russian popularity in Ukraine is yet another delusion of russian propaganda.

If this fake was supposed to instill hope into the russian populace that Ukrainians are afraid of russian advance in the east, it failed. No matter how many tanks, planes and drones russia claims to destroy every day, the maps don’t lie – russia is not making any significant gains. If this fake was supposed to camouflage the upcoming missile attack on the bridge, that won’t work either, since russia already tried to destroy Dnipro bridges with cruise missiles. It failed.

FAKE: Ukrainian refugees in the UK will be deported to Rwanda

Source:

Disproof:

russian propaganda started to push this fake as another evidence of the “betrayal” of Ukraine by European countries. The UK indeed has a policy of deporting illegal migrants to Rwanda in specific cases, but that policy does not apply to Ukrainians, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson had clearly stated today.

Ukrainian refugees are settled in the UK using one of two schemes. The first scheme is for Ukrainian families that already live in the UK, and who want to bring in their relatives over. The second is the “Homes for Ukrainians”, which helps citizens of the UK to house Ukrainian refugee families. Over 67000 Ukrainians are already settled in the UK using these schemes, and the government continues to help Ukrainians in need.

Be advised: russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
