Large-scale cyber attack: Russian hackers have hacked websites of Ukrainian government agencies

The State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine has reported that on the night of 13-14 January a hacker attack was launched against a number of government websites, including the Foreign Ministry, the Defence Ministry and others. A provocative message was posted on the main page of these sites in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish.

The agency stressed that the content of the websites had not been changed and there had been no leak of personal data. A number of other government websites were temporarily suspended in connection with the events.

It is reported that the State Security Service of Ukraine together with the Security Service of Ukraine and Cyber Police are already collecting digital evidence and investigating the incident. At present, most of the affected state resources have already been restored, while others will be available in the near future. The “Diia” mobile app is working as normal.

It is likely that traces of the cyber attack will lead to the Russian Federation, just waiting for the official evidence found during the investigation. Obviously, one of the goals of this cyberattack was to put Ukrainians and Poles – time-tested international partners – at odds, because it was not for nothing that, apart from Russian, the hackers used Polish in their message as well. In social networks, one can already find reports from Polish citizens and Polish language experts that the text in Polish contains errors and was most likely translated into online translators.
