Information Warfare: russian fakes for March 13th 2022 (at 18:00)

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering Russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, mass media, social networks and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of Russian fakes.

FAKE: “Azov” fighters are holding the Greek consul general hostage in Mariupol

Source:

Disproof:

Mariupol, a city of 400 thousand, is besieged by the Russian Forces, who deny all evacuation attempts from the city. After countless bombardments, the city lacks power, heat and water.

Greek consul general, Manolis Androulakis, is indeed in Mariupol. According to statements from Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, he is currently sheltering in the OSCE building, waiting for evacuation routes to open. So, the only ones to hold the consul hostage are the Russians, and they turned Mariupol into the biggest humanitarian catastrophe in the world.

FAKE: Ukrainian soldiers shot a US journalist in Irpin’

Source:

Disproof:

Irpin’, at this time, is under control of the occupying Russian forces, the fact which the Russians stated multiple times. So, the fact that Ukrainian Armed Forces, which, according to Russian propaganda, had lost any combat capabilities and “ceased to exist”, suddenly retake key cities right at the time when foreign journalists are getting shot in said cities, are an obvious lie.

Ukrainian forces do not control Irpin’. According to the late journalist wounded colleague, their car was attacked after they crossed the last Ukrainian check-point on the way to the city. Since the driver turned back when the shooting started, there is no doubt that fire came from the Russian forces.

The Russian propagandists understood that their lie about the control of Irpin’ is blown, so, they decided to switch the attention onto the journalist himself. They claim that Brent Renaud, who, at the time, was not employed by The New York Times, is an intelligence agent for the CIA. They are basically saying that: “Yes, it was us who killed him, but he wasn’t a journalist, he was a spy, so it makes it ok”. But Bren Renaud was a well-known journalist and film-maker, and had no connections to the CIA.

FAKE: Russia’s “demonization” is the West’s fault

Source:

Disproof:

Washington Post never posted any materials with such statements. The mention of the reader’s opinions is another manipulation. Russian propagandists often use bots to post Russian-favored messages in the comment sections of well-regarded Western media outlets, to create a picture of support towards Russia among the Western citizens.

Be advised: Russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass-media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
