Information Warfare: russian fakes for May 1st 2022 (at 18:00)

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, mass media, social networks and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is not as active, per usual, on weekends. Yesterday’s Angelina Jolie visit to Lviv really pissed off russian propagandists, so they are attempting to discredit anyone who supports Ukraine in any form.

Unable, or unwilling to come to grips with the consequences of their actions, russian propaganda is now portraying Europe as a literal Fourth Reich, with “russophobia” being its ideological core. Nothing new, just a logical continuation of their “everyone is against us” narrative.

kremlin officials are announcing that all the businesses of “hostile nations” in russia will be confiscated. We will see more crackdowns on “unwanted” people or companies in the future.

Once again, russian officials are spouting lies about Ukraine being controlled by the west to destroy russia, apparently forgetting that it was russia who attacked Ukraine.

Main fake narratives:

  • Ukrainian soldiers are surrendering en masse
  • Ukraine is being controlled by the west
  • russians don’t commit war crimes, Ukrainians do
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime and spreading disease
  • Sanctions against russia are destroying Europe
  • The world is dominated by russophobia

FAKE: Ukraine is conducting punitive raids in Mykolaiv

Source:

Disproof:

russian propaganda continues its campaign of demonization of Ukraine. This time, they invented a horror tale about “gestapo-like” punitive raids that the Ukrainian army conducts against Ukrainian citizens. Of course, anyone even suspected of harboring russian sympathies are tortured and killed on the spot.

Unsurprisingly, it is all just a bunch of unsubstantiated fairy tales, designed to instill fear into the russian population, but curiously mirroring what russians are doing on the occupied Ukrainian territories. There are reports of russian soldiers kidnapping, torturing and killing people who are suspected to be Ukrainian activists, journalists or former soldiers.

So, russia accuses Ukraine of something, that russia itself is doing. What a surprise.

FAKE: Ukraine has abandoned Kherson region by cutting Internet and mobile connection

Source:

Disproof:

The Kherson region, though occupied by russian forces, is defiantly resisting the invader’s plans to integrate it into russia. russian propaganda is trying their best to shut down the resistance movement by feeding people lies about Ukraine and the war. The core message is: Ukraine has abandoned you, so you should abandon Ukraine. And this fake is a part of such a narrative.

The Internet and mobile connections were not cut by Ukraine, they were cut as a result of russian shelling. Ukrainian officials have stated that repair teams were already dispatched to restore connection to the region.

Be advised: russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass-media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
