Information Warfare: russian fakes for May 7th, 2022 (at 18:00)

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, mass media, social networks, and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is still not as active, since the first week of May is a holiday week for russia. The news is filled with the preparations for the May 9th victory parade.

There are some stories about russian military successes, but they are vague and lack details, which probably means they are fake.

A fire “epidemic” continues to rage across russia. Today, the Krasnoyarsk region is in the focus, where fires destroyed more than 300 houses. Although fires and explosions across russia are commonplace now, officials are avoiding linking them to the war.

Main fake narratives:

  • NATO weapons are useless
  • Ukrainian soldiers are surrendering en masse
  • Ukraine is being controlled by the west
  • russians don’t commit war crimes, Ukrainians do
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime and spreading disease
  • Sanctions against russia are destroying Europe
  • The world is dominated by russophobia

FAKE: Most of the western weapons provided to Ukraine are scrap

Source:

Disproof:

This lie is aimed at russian people, to combat the growing fear and doubt among the population. The war, which was supposed to last 3 days is still ongoing, the promised easy victory is nowhere to be found, the sanctions are tanking the economy, and more and more weapons are arriving in Ukraine from the west. russians are starting to understand that they will not win this war. And that understanding will break the country apart.

So, russian propaganda is doing everything in its power to reassure the russian people. May 9 victory parade is supposed to showcase the strength of russian military, while stories about the western weapons being worthless are downplaying the Ukrainian capabilities. Only, the western weapons had already shown themselves to be highly effective against russian forces. And with more heavy weapons arriving in Ukraine, we see the tempo of Ukrainian counterattacks rise. The Ukrainian military is getting stronger as the war goes on, and russian leadership does not want to admit that.

FAKE: Ukrainians havе mined “Azot” chemical plant in Severodonetsk

Source:

Disproof:

The city of Severodonetsk is under constant shelling by russian army. Russian attempts to take the city are unsuccessful, so, of course, they are accusing Ukrainian defenders of using civilians as human shields, and planning chemical attacks – the usual.

There is no point for Ukraine to blow the ammonia tanks, since, depending on weather, ammonia could spread in the direction of the Ukrainian-controlled territory. And there are no civilians left in Severodonetsk, the city, was evacuated weeks ago. This whole fake is just another russian attempt to discredit Ukraine.

Be advised: russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass-media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
