Information Warfare: russian fakes for May 8th, 2022

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, mass media, social networks, and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is focused almost in its entirety on the May 9 victory celebrations. The cult of victory has become a second religion in the country, one of the few pillars of russian national idea, and the hysteria that precedes the victory day is reaching its apogee. putin, traditionally, rides the wave of this national psychosis, stoking the fires of russian pride by repeating propaganda narratives about russia single-handedly defeating Nazism during WW2. Using the occasion, he, a leader of a militaristic and imperialist dictatorship, accuses the west of being fascist and rewriting history. The concept of irony is unknown in russia.

After videos of the Ukrainian attack on the Snake Island surfaced, russia announced that it had destroyed an incredible amount of Ukrainian planes, helicopters, ships, and drones around the island. They also used Ukrainian videos as proof.

Main fake narratives:

  • NATO weapons are useless
  • Ukrainian soldiers are surrendering en masse
  • Ukraine is being controlled by the west
  • russians don’t commit war crimes, Ukrainians do
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime and spreading disease
  • Sanctions against russia are destroying Europe
  • The world is dominated by russophobia

FAKE: Kharkiv Nazis had booby-trapped the graveyards of WW2 soldiers

Disproof:

russian propaganda is getting sillier by the day. The tales about mythical Ukrainian Nazis progressed from fantasy into downright farce. The Ukrainians are so cartoonishly evil, that they are setting up mines on the graves of WW2 soldiers, to kill anyone who visits them. It’s just another ridiculous bait for russians to make them hate Ukrainians even more, using the hysteria that surrounds May 9 victory day to amplify the effect. And, of course, no evidence is presented.

FAKE: Ukraine is planning missile strikes against its own territory

Disproof:

russia is, once again, accusing Ukraine of attacking Ukraine. Usually, this is used as a “cover-up” for a planned russian attack, to say “we told you so” when russia finally does what it said Ukraine would do. But such fakes are also very important for the internal russian audience.

You see, russia cannot fully isolate its people from the images of destruction and carnage, coming out of Ukraine. So, it uses fakes like this one to convince the population that all the destruction in Ukraine is done by Ukrainians. The weirdest thing is, russians believe it. Probably because it is hard to cast off the image of great and benevolent russia that was cultivated for decades, and face the harsh reality where you are the bad guy, and your “noble and honorable” soldiers rape and kill civilians for fun. For a nation, whose national idea is based on superiority and greatness, it would be tantamount to suicide. So, russian propaganda keeps inventing lies, and russian people keep clinging to them because the truth will lead to despair.

Russia lives in a bubble of lies, which is getting bigger every day. And when the bubble pops, Russia will be no more.

Be advised: russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
