Information Warfare: russian fakes for May 9-10th, 2022 (at 18:00)

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, mass media, social networks, and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of russian fakes.

The russian information space is focused on the May 9 victory celebrations. Everything is filled with images of parades, flags, and other russian and soviet symbolic. The victory day is called the most important day for russia, and the main pillar of russian identity, without which there is no russian nation. How did the russian nation exist before WW2? Nobody knows.

putin used the occasion to reinforce the main narratives of russian propaganda and blame NATO for the war russia had started. NATO becomes more and more prevalent in the official russian narratives as of late and is used both as an enemy against which russian people can rally and as a reason for russian military failures. It is less humiliating to lose to NATO than to Ukraine, after all.

On May 10 putin announced a campaign to combat “natural fires” in russia. Wisely, putin didn’t mention that most of those fires occur on military or strategic installations and that the “fire epidemic” started right as russia invaded Ukraine.

Propaganda celebrates the latest russian missile strike on the city of Odessa, where a couple of hotels and a shopping mall were destroyed. Propagandists called the shopping mall a “NATO weapons depo”, and proclaimed the whole operation a “great success”.

Governors of Ryazan, Saratov, Kirov, and Tomsk regions are resigning from their posts. It seems that the kremlin is experiencing some troubles on the domestic front, so the government is cleaning up and tightening control in the provinces.

Main fake narratives:

  • NATO weapons are useless
  • Ukrainian soldiers are surrendering en masse
  • Ukraine is being controlled by the west
  • russians don’t commit war crimes, Ukrainians do
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime and spreading disease
  • Sanctions against russia are destroying Europe
  • The world is dominated by russophobia

FAKE: russia repelled a Ukrainian attack on the Snake island

Source:

Disproof:

On May 8 Ukrainian military had posted videos, captured by Ukrainian Bayraktar TB2 drones, of an attack on russian-controlled Snake Island in the Black Sea. In the videos, the island was bombarded by planes, ships around the island were destroyed, and a helicopter, that landed on the island, was hit by a missile.

Sometime later, russian MoD stated that russian forces in the Black Sea repelled a Ukrainian attack on the Snake Island. They said that russian air force sunk a bunch of Ukrainian vessels that tried to recapture the island, destroyed four landed helicopters, bombarded the infantry that was dropped on the island, and shot down an enormous amount of Ukrainian plains. They used Ukrainian footage as proof.

So this is where we are at, right now. russian propaganda steals videos where Ukrainian forces destroy russians, and claim that those are actually russian forces, destroying Ukrainians. It’s like they are not even trying anymore.

Be advised: russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
