Information Warfare: russian fakes for May 13th, 2022

Millions of Ukrainians are encountering russian propaganda every day. It spreads through TV, radio, mass media, social networks, and by word of mouth. To defeat the enemy, we must fight it on all fronts. To this end, we have prepared a daily compilation of russian fakes.

Today, the russian information space is focused on Latvia and Poland.

According to russian propaganda, Latvia is now a Nazi country. Latvia’s resistance to russian propaganda efforts caused ire in the kremlin, so now all the major media channels are generating hate toward the country.

Poland is getting a similar treatment, after all the help it provided to Ukraine, and the statements of its PM, who said that putin is far worse than Hitler and Stalin, and called for the dismantling of the “monstrous russian ideology”. Now, russia accuses almost all of its western neighbors of being Nazi countries. Finland is next in line.

Main fake narratives:

  • Poland is planning to capture western Ukraine
  • NATO weapons are useless
  • Ukrainian soldiers are surrendering en masse
  • The west is controlling Ukraine
  • russians don’t commit war crimes, Ukrainians do
  • Ukrainian refugees are causing crime and spreading disease
  • Sanctions against russia are destroying Europe
  • The world is dominated by russophobia

FAKE: UK officers are leading the Ukrainian forces

Source:

Disproof:

After a slew of military failures, russian propaganda needed to explain to the russian people why their supposedly invincible army was doing so poorly. Propagandists have shifted their narratives, framing the war as a confrontation between russia and NATO, not russia and Ukraine. After all, losing against NATO would be less embarrassing.

This fake is a continuation of that narrative. Apparently, British officers are directly controlling the Armed Forces of Ukraine and were doing so since before the war, and if not for the British, russia would win the war easily. This fake allows russians to downplay the tactical acumen of Ukrainians, and save face at the same time.

The truth is, there were no British officers in Ukraine when the war started. Britain had a few military specialists who were training Ukrainian soldiers, but they were all removed from the country in February 2022.

No matter how hard russia tries to deny it, they were beaten by the courage and superior tactics of the Ukrainian army.

FAKE: EU is an aggressive militaristic organization

Source:

Disproof:

This fake is simple to understand. Ukraine is making a lot of effort to join the EU, and a lot of EU countries are backing Ukraine. russia does not want Ukraine to join the EU. russia needs a weak Ukraine without any allies, an Ukraine that is easy to defeat. So they are claiming that EU is an aggressive militaristic organization, and Ukraine joining the EU will break Ukrainian neutrality, which is one of the key points of the russo-Ukrainian negotiations. It’s quite amusing to see russia accusing someone of being aggressive and militaristic.

russia is trying to weaken Ukraine, so it will try to block Ukraine’s European integration. We expect the narrative about the “aggressive and militaristic” EU to become more mainstream in russian propaganda and official statements.

Be advised: russia is waging a full-scale information war against Ukraine. There are multitudes of new fakes swarming through the mass media every day. To protect you and your family, be sure to obtain and share your information only from official sources.
