The European Parliament adopted by a majority of votes the resolution on the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor in Ukraine, recognizing the terrible events of the 1930s as the genocide against the Ukrainian people.

As an Ukrinform correspondent reports, the document condemning the man-made famine, Holodomor, in Ukraine was adopted by 507 votes in favour, 12 against with 17 abstentions.

“Whereas the Great Famine, or Holodomor, was a deliberate, planned and consistent action carried out by the despotic Bolshevik regime ruling the Soviet Union to break the resistance of the Ukrainian population and subjugate them under an oppressive state… [the European Parliament] recognises the Holodomor (the artificial famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine) as a genocide against the Ukrainian people, aiming to destroy the social foundations of the Ukrainian nation, its traditions, culture and national identity,” reads the resolution.

The resolution expresses solidarity with the people of Ukraine and commemorates millions of people who died as a result of the purposeful actions of the Stalinist regime to organize an artificial famine.

The European Parliament calls on all countries, especially the Russian Federation, as well as other countries that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union, to open their archives on the events of 1932-1933 in order to reveal the full truth of this tragedy. The MEPs also urge EU member states and third countries to promote public awareness and remembering the lessons learned from this genocide in order to avoid any similar catastrophe in the future and call for a historical and legal assessment of the Holodomor.

Drawing links to Soviet times, the resolution accuses the current Russian regime of violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, seeking to liquidate Ukraine as a nation state and destroying the identity and culture of its people. It also condemns the fact that the ongoing war has created a global food crisis, with Russia destroying and looting Ukraine’s grain stores and continuing to make it difficult to ensure Ukrainian grain exports to the most deprived countries in the world.

While condemning the current Russian regime for manipulating historical memory for the purpose of its own survival, Parliament calls on the Russian Federation, as the primary successor of the Soviet Union, to apologize for those crimes.

The adopted Resolution of the European Parliament will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada, the President, and the Government of Ukraine, the High Representative of the EU, the Council of the EU, the European Commission, the governments and parliaments of the EU member states, the President, the Government, and the Parliament of the Russian Federation, the UN Secretary-General, the OSCE Secretary General, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
