During a meeting with a delegation of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, Pope Francis recalled the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine and emphasized the necessity of joint efforts to find ways to peace.

This is reported by Vatican News, Ukrinform reports.

“The tragic reality of this war, which seems to have no end, requires all of us to make joint creative efforts to imagine and implement ways to peace, to a just and stable peace,” the pontiff said.

The Pope noted that the meeting with the delegation of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which arrived in Rome for the celebrations of the Day of Saints Peter and Paul, took place in “an atmosphere of various anxieties,” including the theme of peace, “especially in suffering Ukraine.”

According to him, Russia’s war against Ukraine “demonstrates that all wars are in fact a catastrophe.” Francis also mentioned the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam by the Russians, which forced many residents of the southern regions of Ukraine to leave their homes.

“As Christ’s disciples, we cannot accept war, but we have a duty to work together for peace,” the Pope emphasized.

As reported, the wives of Ukrainian diplomats at meetings with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Istanbul and Pope Francis in the Vatican called on spiritual leaders to help free Ukrainian prisoners and stop nuclear terrorism and ecocide by Russia.
