The reigning champion of the Wimbledon tennis tournament, Czech Marketa Vondroušová, lost her title in the opening match.
On the second game day of the competition, Vondroušová (No. 6 in the world rankings) lost to Spaniard Jessica Buzas Maneiro of Spain (No. 83) in 1 hour and 10 minutes at Centre Court in London – 4:6, 2:6, Ukrinform reports.
Earlier in the history of Wimbledon, the current champion lost in the first round of the next year’s tournament only once – in 1994, German Steffi Graf lost to Laura McNeil from the United States, who eventually reached the semifinals.
The third Grand Slam tournament of the season will run until July 14.
