The DPRK troops sent to support Russian forces in the Kursk region suffered significant losses in the battles – about 4,000 people – without achieving great results.

This was reported by the British Ministry of Defense on social network X, citing intelligence data, Ukrinform reports.

As noted in the report, as of mid-January 2025, the DPRK forces probably suffered about 4,000 casualties during offensive hostilities against Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation. Of these, about a quarter were killed in action.

According to intelligence, there were about 11,000 DPRK soldiers in the Kursk region.

“The high rate of DPRK losses in a short time period has almost certainly significantly deteriorated DPRK forces capacity to conduct offensive combat operations in support of Russia’s attempts to push Ukrainian forces out of Kursk,” the intelligence report says.

The report notes that despite significant combat losses, DPRK troops achieved only tactical success in the Kursk region.

The British also noted that Russian and North Korean troops are almost certainly facing interoperability difficulties.

“The two forces do not speak a common language, and DPRK troops are almost certainly have difficulty integrating into the Russian’s command and control structure,” the report concluded.

As reported by Ukrinform, on January 21, Ukrainian defenders repelled a massive assault by Russian troops in the Kursk region, neutralizing almost a hundred Russian servicemen and ten units of enemy armored vehicles.
