Zaporizhzhia region begins construction of 12th underground school

The Zaporizhzhia region has started the construction of the 12th underground school – in the city of Vilniansk.

Ivan Fedorov, the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, said this in a post on Telegram, Ukrinform reports.

“The construction of the 12th ‘underground school’ in the Zaporizhzhia region has started – in the city of Vilniansk,” the report says.

Fedorov noted that more than 2,000 schoolchildren live in the Vilniansk community. The underground space will be designed to accommodate 1,000 children in two shifts. Together with other school shelters, it will cover almost all pupils in the community.

“The monolithic construction of the school at a depth of 7 meters will have reinforced wall and ceiling thickness, evacuation exits, and a fire protection system. Classrooms will have interactive equipment and comfortable furniture. Thus, the new space will become the most reliable and modern place for learning in the community,” the regional governor said.

Fedorov said that a contract worth UAH 107 million had been signed with the contractor. Construction is scheduled to be completed by mid-August 2025.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, 23 underground schools are planned to be built in the Zaporizhzhia region to provide quality education for children amid constant Russian shelling. Currently, two such schools are already operating in the regional center. Four more are being built in Zaporizhzhia and five in other communities of the region.
