On February 6, 2025, the Energy Customs of the Ukrainian State Customs Service made the first customs declaration on the export of biomethane.

The relevant statement was made by the Energy Customs’ press service on Facebook, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“On February 6, 2025, the Energy Customs of the Ukrainian State Customs Service successfully completed a periodic customs declaration on the transportation of the first biomethane export shipment through the customs border of Ukraine towards Europe by pipeline,” the report states.

As noted by the Energy Customs, biomethane exports unlock the new opportunities for the agricultural sector and investors in the field of bioenergy. Biomethane is produced from organic waste, promoting the development of agriculture.

“Ukraine has a huge potential for biomethane production and can be an important supplier of green energy on the European market. We are taking another step towards sustainable energy and economic growth,” the Energy Customs emphasized.

According to the Ukrainian Energy Ministry, the first biomethane shipment to the EU amounted to 67,000 cubic meters.

“Ukraine is ready to become a reliable supplier of clean energy to Europe. The [Energy] Ministry pays considerable attention to the issue of biomethane exports, which is important within the new business model of the natural gas market and the energy sector of Ukraine as a whole,” Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko said.

The conditions and tariffs for connection and transportation through the Ukrainian gas transmission system for biomethane producers are similar to those for natural gas producers.

A reminder that, as of early January 2025, Ukrainian producers pumped the first million cubic meters of biomethane into underground gas storage facilities.

As of January 2025, three biomethane plants were running in Ukraine. In the coming year, another four plants are expected to be launched, increasing the total production capacity to 111 million cubic meters per annum.
