U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin are likely to attempt to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Russia-Ukraine war by either April 20 or May 9.
That is according to the Financial Times, Ukrinform reports.
It is noted that on April 20 this year, both Orthodox and Catholic churches will celebrate Easter.
Another probable date is May 9 when Russia commemorates Victory Day, marking the USSR’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. “Putin would want an agreement on such a symbolic day,” an unnamed Ukrainian official said.
According to individuals who have interacted with Putin during the war, his primary objective is to reshape Europe’s security architecture, ensuring that Russia has a recognized sphere of influence — similar to how the Yalta Conference in 1945 secured Soviet influence over Eastern Europe.
As reported by Ukrinform, on Wednesday, February 12, President Donald Trump held a phone call with Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed Ukraine.
Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for about an hour, discussing potential peace efforts, collaboration, and technological cooperation.
Following the calls, Trump described the conversations as “very good and positive”, emphasizing the need to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
