Due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to halt foreign aid under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) program, Poland’s largest aid hub for Ukrainian refugees, “Mapuj Pomoc,” has lost its funding.
This was reported by Polskie Radio, as per Ukrinform.
It is noted that for many years, numerous civil society organizations in Poland have received funding from USAID and the U.S. State Department to support initiatives aimed at promoting human rights, equality, democracy, and independent media.
Iwona Górka, a representative of “Mapuj Pomoc”, stated that the organization is actively searching for alternative sources of funding and is in talks with partners and the Polish government.
“Due to the sudden suspension of USAID assistance, we are trying to find new forms of support. We are working to determine what we can do here and now. The key issue is unblocking these funds, and we are working on that… We are also analyzing the conditions with senators, and we will try to engage in discussions with the government to explore possibilities for alternative funding and support,” she said.
As reported by Ukrinform, on January 20, Donald Trump signed an executive order suspending all foreign aid programs for 90 days while a review is conducted to determine whether they align with his administration’s policy goals.
On January 24, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered a “freeze on all foreign aid programs”, with the exception of humanitarian aid for Gaza and Sudan.
Later, Trump called for the complete shutdown of USAID, citing corruption and fraud.
In response, two of the largest labor unions in the U.S. — the American Federation of Government Employees and the American Foreign Service Association — filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, demanding that the closure of USAID be halted.
This week, the White House dismissed USAID Inspector General Paul Martin.
