Efforts ongoing to extinguish smoldering hotspots at Chernobyl NPP

Firefighting efforts continue at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) after a Russian drone attack on February 14 ignited smoldering hotspots.

As reported by Ukrinform, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) shared the update on Facebook.

“SES high-altitude rescue teams are working on the partial dismantling of the Shelter structures and extinguishing smoldering hotspots on the arch,” the statement reads.

Thermal imaging is being used for continuous monitoring.

The radiation levels at the Chernobyl NPP industrial site remain within normal limits, posing no threat to the population.

Previously, Ukrinform reported that, according to the SES, as of February 23, no new smoldering hotspots had been found at the ChNPP Shelter.

On the night of February 14, a Russian attack drone struck the protective shelter over the destroyed 4th reactor of the Chernobyl NPP.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) found fragments of a Russian Geran-2 kamikaze drone (Shahed type) inside and near the protective structure. According to experts, the attack was deliberate.

By the evening of February 14, the fire was localized on the outer shell of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) arch.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called the drone strike on the Chernobyl NPP confinement structure a very serious incident, warning that nuclear safety in Ukraine remains at great risk.

On February 17, firefighting efforts resumed after new smoldering hotspots were detected at the Chernobyl NPP.
