MoD of Netherlands: We need to create security guarantees for Ukraine

Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said this in an exclusive commentary to an Ukrinform correspondent in The Hague.

“If we want to achieve a just and sustainable peace, we need to create security guarantees for Ukraine. And now, of course, we are discussing what these security guarantees might look like. I think it’s important that we do this together with Ukraine, together with European countries, because European countries have an important role to play in this process. But we also have to involve the United States, because we also need their support to make these security guarantees reliable. And this is what we are working on now,” Brekelmans said.

According to him, European countries should produce much more weapons, because “it is necessary to strengthen our military forces.”

“And we have to do it together with Ukraine, because we know that Ukraine has a great production potential. And I think it’s very good if we work together, because Ukraine will be able to use these drones immediately, and European countries will be able to develop their industries. And this is exactly what we are doing now as part of our drone action plan. There are many projects in this program where Dutch and Ukrainian manufacturers work together on drones. And I think it’s beneficial for both sides because Ukraine gets more drones that can be used right away, and the Netherlands can also further develop our drone manufacturing capability. We can share our technology and innovations, and on the other hand, also learn from Ukraine, because of course they use these drones every day. So I think it’s a great potential for both sides,” emphasized Brekelmans.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, the total value of the Netherlands’ military support to Ukraine has increased to almost EUR 5.88 billion as of February 4, 2025.
