Starmer reassures Zelensky of unwavering support for Ukraine

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had phone calls with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and Donald Trump of the U.S. after their tense talks at the White House and expressed his “unwavering support for Ukraine”.

The Independent reported this with reference to the UK government’s press service, Ukrinform saw.

“The Prime Minister has tonight spoken to both President Trump and President Zelensky,” a government spokeswoman said. “He retains unwavering support for Ukraine, and is doing all he can to find a path forward to a lasting peace based on sovereignty and security for Ukraine.”

Downing Street’s statement came against the backdrop of unity among European political leaders in support of Ukraine, the publication notes.

Starmer also spoke by phone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday, the British government reported.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes to deter Russian aggression. He outlined the purpose of the summit he is convening in London on Sunday, to which Turkey’s Foreign Minister has also been invited.

As Ukrinform reported, Starmer will host on Sunday a summit of European leaders, which will also be attended by Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky.
