U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had received an “important letter” from President Zelensky saying Ukraine was ready to sign a minerals agreement and engage in negotiation to achieve a strong and lasting peace.
He made this statement on Tuesday during his address to a joint session of both chambers of the U.S. Congress, a Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“Earlier today, I received an important letter from President Zelensky of Ukraine. The letter reads: ‘Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer’,” Trump declared.
He emphasized that the letter also underscored that no one desires peace more than the Ukrainian people.
In this context, Trump noted that President Zelensky expressed his commitment to working toward a lasting peace and conveyed gratitude for America’s efforts in helping Ukraine preserve its sovereignty and independence. Trump also mentioned that Ukraine had expressed readiness to sign a minerals agreement at any convenient time.
“I appreciate that he (Volodymyr Zelensky – ed.) sent this letter,” Trump said.
At the same time, the U.S. President stated that his administration was engaged in serious discussions with the Russian side. He emphasized that he had received “strong signals” indicating that Russia was also ready for peace.
As Ukrinform previously reported, on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that his meeting with Donald Trump last Friday in Washington “did not go as expected.” He noted that it was now time to set things right.
