Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has said that the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine would be delayed until next year.
That’s according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Ukrinform reports.
De Wever explained that the delay was due to technical issues affecting the supply of F-35 jets, which in turn postponed the transfer of F-16s. He refuted claims in some media outlets suggesting that Belgium would not deliver the aircraft until 2028, emphasizing that the transfer would happen as soon as possible.
He also noted that Brussels was already training specialists to operate the jets. According to De Wever, pilots were currently undergoing training, along with mechanics, and Belgium would provide spare parts as well. He mentioned that while some F-16s might be sent to Ukraine this year primarily for spare parts, fully operational aircraft would be delivered next year.
He also described his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “very positive” and reaffirmed Belgium’s continued support for Ukraine.
