To prepare for the heating season, Ukraine will need to import 2.5-3 billion cubic meters of natural gas if gas production resumes.
This assessment was made by Mykhailo Svyshcho, a natural gas market observer at ExPro Consulting, in a commentary to Ukrinform.
“If Ukraine manages to restore production volumes to the level of January 2025 by early April, and there are no new production damages, under the most optimistic scenario, we will need to import 2.5-3 billion cubic meters by the beginning of the next autumn-winter period,” Svyshcho said.
The expert also noted that purchases on European markets are a reliable source of natural gas supplies for Ukraine.
“Given the need for significant volumes of gas by next winter, it would be useful for Ukraine to enter into longer-term contracts to protect itself from spot price fluctuations. However, financing of natural gas purchases is an important issue,” he added.
As reported, in February, compared to January, Ukraine increased gas imports 12 times to 511.8 million cubic meters.
