The Ukrainian delegation in New York, attending the regular session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), is promoting its own agenda, particularly concerning holding Russia accountable for crimes committed during the war.
Government Commissioner for Gender Policy Kateryna Levchenko shared this in a comment to Ukrinform.
“We continue to use the commission’s platform to advance our agenda,” she said. “This includes women’s leadership and gender equality in Ukraine’s recovery, as well as Russia’s accountability for crimes committed in Ukraine — torture, child abductions, deportations, and conflict-related sexual violence.”
According to Levchenko, this year’s session demonstrated “a much greater inclusion of Ukraine in the global context and its subjectivity.”
Members of the delegation participated in numerous events and held meetings with representatives from many countries, including those from Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
“I am seeing strong mobilization of European countries in connection with global politics,” Levchenko noted, adding that many Global South countries are also showing leadership in gender policy issues.
She highlighted the “unwavering support” for Ukraine from UN Women and other agencies, particularly in matters of recovery.
The government commissioner emphasized that Ukraine is not only demonstrating resilience in all areas — military, humanitarian, and economic — but is also creating models that could be effective in solving problems in other countries. This includes survivor assistance centers, which were established in Ukraine in June 2022.
The Ukrainian delegation also held several parallel events. Deputy Head of the International Law Department at the Ministry of Defense Inna Zavorotko spoke about women serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Many events involved the Ukrainian community in New York, the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, and other diaspora organizations.
For the first time, Ukraine chaired several events, with Levchenko moderating an interactive dialogue with youth.
Additionally, a significant number of Ukraine-related events were organized by delegations from Finland, Germany, Canada, Norway, Denmark, and other countries.
Earlier, in a comment to Ukrinform, Deputy Foreign Minister Mariana Betsa stated that the main goal of the Ukrainian delegation at the CSW session was to convey information to the international community about crimes committed by the Russian invaders.
As reported, the 69th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women is taking place in New York from March 10 to 21. The session focuses on issues of gender equality, women’s rights, and the elimination of all forms of discrimination.
The Ukrainian delegation is led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Olha Stefanishyna, who is participating remotely.
