White House says Russia agreed to limited ceasefire

The Donald Trump administration announced that Russia has agreed to a limited stop in attacks on energy facilities and infrastructure in Ukraine as part of an initiative proposed by the U.S. to establish peace in the country.

The White House said this in a readout of Donald Trump’s call with Vladimir Putin, Ukrinform reports.

“The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire, and permanent peace,” the statement reads.

These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East, the statement added.

Both leaders agreed that the conflict must end with a lasting peace.

Additionally, Trump and Putin stressed the need for improved bilateral relations between the United States and Russia. In this context, they spoke broadly about the Middle East as a region of potential cooperation to prevent future conflicts.

Furthermore, the two sides discussed the need to stop proliferation of strategic weapons and will engage with others to ensure the broadest possible application.

The conversation also addressed the situation surrounding Israel. Specifically, both parties confirmed that Iran must never have the opportunity to destroy Israel.

“The two leaders agreed that a future with an improved bilateral relationship between the United States and Russia has huge upside. This includes enormous economic deals and geopolitical stability when peace has been achieved,” the statement concluded.

U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone call with Russian leader Putin on Tuesday, lasting more than 90 minutes.
