U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that it “would be a great thing” to stop Russia’s war against Ukraine, emphasizing that the situation regarding the containment of the conflict is “somewhat under control.”
Trump made these remarks during an interview with Outkick founder Clay Travis, Ukrinform reports.
“I think it’s somewhat under control. […] It’d be a great thing to be able to stop it,” Trump said.
During the interview, Trump highlighted his “very good” relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“So, I know him very well. It’s amazing that we didn’t get into any major skirmishes because of the ‘Russia, Russia, Russia’ hoax,” Trump said.
He said that Russia’s actions in Georgia and Crimea occurred under U.S. Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, respectively, while the full-scale invasion of Ukraine took place during Joe Biden’s administration.
“I don’t think there’s anybody in the world that going to stop (Putin), except me, and I think I’m going to be able to stop him,” Trump said.
He also mentioned having “very rational discussions” with the Russian leader.
“We’ve had some very rational discussions, and I just want to see the people stop getting killed. They’re losing 2,500 young kids a week, and they’re Russian and they’re Ukrainian,” he said.
On March 21, Trump expressed confidence that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia had already reached the stage where “the confines of a deal” on a peaceful settlement could be discussed.
