Polish Sejm Marshal Szymon Holownia has said that Europe should transfer all frozen Russian assets to Ukraine, rather than just the interest generated from them, and assist Kyiv in managing them effectively.
According to Ukrinform’s correspondent, Holownia made this statement on Monday during the Inter-Parliamentary Conference for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defense Policy in Warsaw.
He emphasized that Russia, as the aggressor, should be held accountable by paying with its assets, not merely the interest they generate. He also noted that Europe’s focus should be on ensuring that Ukraine utilizes these funds wisely and efficiently.
Holownia said that demonstrating courage and leadership in Europe is essential for achieving this, though he remarked that such qualities are currently in short supply.
He also suggested that U.S. President Donald Trump appears to be more preoccupied with China, Iran, and Russia than with Ukraine.
For this reason, he noted, European leaders must engage in serious discussions in Paris, Berlin, and Brussels about utilizing Russian assets. He expressed concern that Europe is making a critical mistake by prioritizing the stability of its currency over holding Russian President Vladimir Putin accountable for the war.
Holownia stated that Europe is currently financing the war instead of ensuring that Putin, who initiated it, bears the financial burden.
Earlier, Deputy Head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office Iryna Mudra denied claims that the European Union would not confiscate frozen Russian assets. Some media outlets had suggested that the EU had halted discussions on the matter.
