The foreign ministers of the Weimar+ nations (Poland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom) said they would increase aid to Ukraine and consider new sanctions against Russia to force it to agree to a ceasefire.
This was stated in the declaration following the meeting held in Madrid, Ukrinform reports citing Reuters.
In the final document, the foreign ministers of the Weimar+ countries and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas called on Russia to agree to an ” immediate and unconditional ceasefire on equal terms and with full implementation”.
They also declared readiness to exert further pressure on Moscow, including through the introduction of new sanctions, in order to provide Kyiv with “the best possible position to secure a just and lasting peace”.
The ministers of the Weimar+ countries said that military, political and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine would be increased.
According to them, any peace agreement must be backed by reliable security guarantees for Ukraine.
The government officials also stated that they would not accept any agreement that limits the Ukrainian defense industry or military presence of partner countries on Ukrainian soil.
The foreign ministers noted that they were committed to ensuring Russia’s full accountability for war crimes, in the context of the creation of a special court within the Council of Europe.
It is also emphasized that Russian assets should remain frozen until Moscow ends the war and compensates Ukraine for the damage it has caused.
Spain insists that allies use such assets as an alternative form of financing aid for Ukraine or even boosting their own defense spending.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski discussed the most pressing issues of international policy with the heads of foreign ministries of the Weimar+ format and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, primarily the situation around Ukraine.
