Moldova’s President Maia Sandu hopes to maintain close relations with Romania after the presidential elections scheduled for May.
This was reported by NewsMaker, Ukrinform saw.
“We’d like to continue maintaining excellent partnership relations with Romania so that we can count on it, as we have been doing now and in recent years. The last thing we want would be for our partners in Bucharest to take instructions from Moscow, but I really hope this will not happen. Romania is a strong, democratic, pro-European state. But there is a risk, in particular for more consolidated democracies. I believe that citizens will be able to mobilize and overcome these situations,” Sandu said on the air of the “La 360 de grade” show on Radio Moldova.
She expressed hope that a politician with pro-European views will be elected as president of Romania, who will support Moldova on its path to European integration.
“We need a president with whom we can continue to work, whom we can support, who will continue to promote Moldova’s accession to the EU. We have serious plans: to build bridges, a highway, to carry out economic integration, to put the customs in order so as not to waste so much time. For these ambitious projects, we need a reliable partner,” Sandu added.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, the Romanian government has approved new dates for the presidential elections, which will be held in May. On November 24 last year, a low-profile far-right pro-Russian politician Calin Georgescu won the first round of the presidential elections in Romania.
Romania’s Constitutional Court later annulled the results of the first round following allegations that Russia had executed a coordinated online campaign to promote the far-right candidate to win the first round.
