Head of the Specialized Anti-corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) Oleksandr Klymenko discussed strengthening the independence of his agency and the National Anti-corruption Bureau during a meeting with G7 ambassadors.
The SAPO reported this on Facebook, Ukrinform saw.
“The discussion centred on strengthening the independence of SAPO and NABU in the context of key legislative initiatives — including the repeal of the so-called “Lozovyi amendments,” granting the SAPO Head the authority to independently initiate proceedings against Members of Parliament, and other relevant draft laws currently before the Verkhovna Rada. The outcome and content of these initiatives will be critical to the effectiveness of Ukraine’s efforts to combat high-level corruption,” the report says.
The ambassadors praised SAPO and NABU’s work and reaffirmed their “strong, ongoing support”.
In turn, the SAPO expressed gratitude to the Embassy of Canada, which this year chairs the Group of Seven, as well as the G7 countries and the European Union, for their consistent and principled position to strengthen the rule of law in Ukraine.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, the chiefs of the NABU and SAPO are in favor of introducing amendments to Ukraine’s legislation that would allow the agencies to independently file reports into the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations on People’s Deputies targeted by their inquiries.
