The Vatican has announced the death of Pope Francis.

According to Ukrinform, Vatican News announced this on the social media platform X.

“Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta,” the post reads.

At 9:45 on Easter Monday, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, spoke these words at the Casa Santa Marta:

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

As previously reported by Ukrinform, Pope Francis was hospitalized on February 14 at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital with a severe respiratory infection. Initially diagnosed and treated for bronchitis, he was later found to have bilateral pneumonia.

He spent several weeks in the hospital. This decline in his health marked the most serious medical episode in his 12-year papacy.

After his discharge from hospital on March 23, the head of the Holy See made only a handful of public appearances. He missed the Good Friday and Holy Saturday services.

On Easter Sunday, Pope Francis held a brief private meeting with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.

That same day, he also appeared publicly to bless thousands of people gathered for Easter Mass in St. Peter’s Square.
