French President Emmanuel Macron stated that he does not believe Russian President Vladimir Putin will observe the self-declared three-day ceasefire, but emphasized that Europe expects a serious decision from Russia on at least a 30-day ceasefire to coordinate future actions.
Macron made the statement during a joint press briefing following a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the Élysée Palace, Ukrinform reports.
“Today, there is only one question we need answered: Is Russia ready for a ceasefire lasting at least 30 days, so that we can build a strong and lasting peace in that context?” Macron asked.
According to him, it is essential for the international community that the Russian president should keep the promises he made, including those made during talks with the U.S. administration.
“After the promised three days (of ceasefire), which will undoubtedly not be respected, just like previous ones, will the Russian president finally act seriously? That’s what matters to us,” Macron stressed.
Macron noted that European leaders are working to achieve a 30-day ceasefire to take responsibility for the next steps.
“In any case, we are ready to support such a 30-day ceasefire and build a strong and lasting peace, taking responsibility and working in very close coordination with the Chancellor,” he added.
As Ukrinform previously reported, Friedrich Merz is on his first foreign visit as Chancellor, meeting President Macron in France.
