US opposed to including term ‘further support’ for Ukraine in G7 statement – Politico

U.S. government officials are opposed to including the term “further support” for Ukraine in a statement currently being prepared following a meeting of G7 finance ministers.

According to Politico, which cited two officials involved in the negotiations, the U.S. is opposed to including “further support” for Ukraine in a G7 statement that is being hashed out by finance ministers in Canada.

Washington is also reluctant to describe Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine as “illegal” in the text.

In February, it emerged that U.S. administration officials were also against labeling Russia as the “aggressor” in a G7 statement marking the third anniversary of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Then in April, the U.S. informed its G7 allies that it would not support a statement condemning Russia’s attack on the city of Sumy, citing a desire to continue negotiations with Moscow.
