Cultural casualties of war: Ukraine reports over 300 artists and journalists killed

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, as many as 204 artists and 108 Ukrainian and foreign media workers have been killed in Ukraine.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was announced by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.

The Ministry stated that “these figures reflect not only the scale of the losses, but also serve as a reminder of the tragic pages of our history. Just as in the 1920s and early 1930s the Stalinist regime destroyed a generation of Ukrainian artists, today Russia is deliberately targeting the cultural elite of Ukraine.”

The Ministry drew a parallel to the ‘Executed Renaissance’ — a literary and artistic generation that produced masterpieces of literature, painting, music, and theater. “These artists were the pride of our nation. Today, we are again losing not just talented Ukrainians, but a part of our soul, because every artist is a unique individual who enriched Ukrainian culture,” the Ministry noted.

Journalists working in Ukraine today are producing vital news, investigations, and reports under heightened risks. They are documenting the war to provide Ukraine and the world with accurate information about ongoing events.

“Media workers are collecting undeniable evidence of the invaders’ crimes around the clock and shedding light on the strength, heroism, and courage of our defenders,” the Ministry added.

The Ministry emphasized that Russia’s systematic crimes against journalists and the media pose a serious threat to freedom of speech and information security, undermining democratic values and human rights. The Ministry called for remembrance of those who have died.

The official website of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy features published lists of artists, cultural workers, and media professionals who have died as a result of the war.
