The recent wave of intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities is a reaction to successful operations carried out by Ukrainian forces on Russian territory. Poland is actively advocating for a new package of sanctions against Russia in response to its crimes in Ukraine.
Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pawel Wrosski said this in a comment to an Ukrinform correspondent.
“Major Polish media outlets have been extensively covering the attacks on Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa, especially over the past few days. These are clearly linked to Russia’s attempts to retaliate for the successful operations of Ukrainian forces,” Wronski said.
He noted that Poland is “actively pushing for another sanctions package,” a point repeatedly raised by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski during meetings of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
At the same time, Wronski stressed that Hungary and Slovakia hold different positions on the matter.
According to him, Budapest is also blocking the return of EU funds to Poland for the support it has provided to Ukraine to date. He clarified that the amount in question is around PLN 2 billion (approximately $500 million).
Wronski said that recovering these funds is a matter of importance, as they are intended for reinvestment in the Polish defense industry to support continued arms production, including for Ukraine’s needs.
In his opening address to the participants of the Ukraine-Southeast Europe Summit held in Odesa on June 11, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia remains the main source of threats for all countries in Southeast Europe.
