Germany is co-financing three drone production projects in Ukraine, though there are currently no plans to support missile manufacturing.
This was stated in an interview with Ukrinform by renowned German expert and Senior Fellow at the Munich Security Conference, Nico Lange.
“Germany is co-financing three drone projects… These are not new projects; they are not copying Taurus or anything like that… These are three ongoing projects that can now move forward more effectively due to €400 million in allocated funding,” the expert explained.
He suggested that communication from the German side may not have been entirely clear, leading to the impression — following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Berlin — that brand-new initiatives were underway.
Lange called it a positive development that Germany is investing in drone production, which allows for greater scalability and faster implementation. He also emphasized the professionalism and ingenuity of Ukrainian specialists, saying their developments are impressive, and with German financial support, Ukrainian arms and technologies could achieve even greater results.
Drone production, he noted, is just one part of Germany’s broader military assistance.
“It’s the right move to invest in these ongoing projects. It will certainly help Ukraine… Investment in Ukraine’s defense sector is the right direction. More can be done here, including industrial partnerships,” Lange stated.
He also commented on the Security Service of Ukraine’s Spiderweb operation, expressing hope that more such operations would follow.
“It’s a pity so few aircraft were destroyed. In my view, it would be great if all Russian bombers were taken out. That would also benefit European security,” he said.
Lange praised Ukraine’s approach of “completely ignoring the advice and commentary of many Western partners and doing what aligns with its own national security interests.”
As previously reported, during President Zelensky’s visit to Berlin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany would finance the production of Ukrainian long-range weapons systems with no restrictions on their range. This was reaffirmed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius during his visit to Kyiv on June 12.
