U.S. President Donald Trump left the G7 summit in Canada on Monday, skipping the signing of a joint communiqué, which was scheduled for Tuesday.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt wrote about Trump’s decision on X.
“[B]ecause of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State,” she noted in a post released last night.
According to the spokesperson, “President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.”
“Much was accomplished,” Leavitt added.
Thus, the head of the White House will neither sign a joint communiqué of the summit, nor meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine who has been invited to the event.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, on Tuesday, Zelensky will personally attend the G7 summit where will hold several bilateral meetings. A meeting with Trump was also expected to be held.
The Group of Seven summit is taking place on June 16-17 in Canada’s Rockies.
Trump made several controversial statements on the first day of the summit, including calling for a return to a G8 format with Russia at the table. Donald Trump also blamed former U.S. President Barack Obama and ex-Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau of expelling Russia from the Group, which the current president believes was a “mistake” as he claims Russia would not have started the war had it remained part of G8.
It should be noted that Russia was kicked out of the club the most developed economies due to its illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014.
